What is PCOS?

There is a long list of causes for hormonal imbalance and this can be narrowed by phase of life. During child bearing age, one common abnormality is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). In PCOS, there is typically increased male hormone among other things and can lead to irregular periods, infertility and difficulty losing weight. There are medications, supplements and diet options to assist with treatment of symptoms. This diagnosis is made with clinical history, physical exam, hormone testing and ultrasound in some cases. PCOS patients tend to have a component of insulin resistance which may lead to other health problems later in life. For this reason, it is ideal to manage to prevent progression.

Perimenopause and Menopause

Another common hormonal imbalance comes as we are transitioning to perimenopause and menopause. Although there is a range of symptoms, most affected women can find this transition frustrating and note a significant effect on the quality of life. The perimenopausal time can last for years so coming up with ways to manage symptoms can be life-changing. Some of the common symptoms that are bothersome include hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbance, joint pain, mood changes, and weight gain.

Although we cannot usually take all symptoms away completely, there are significant improvements to be made. We offer both hormonal and non-hormonal treatment options. As each woman’s symptoms and treatment goals can be different, treatment plans are individualized to each patient. No one thing works for everyone and we are happy to review options with you.
